Feds indict medical pot dispensary operators

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced a set of indictments Tuesday alleging that operators of nearly a dozen medical marijuana dispensaries — including two in West Hollywood — profiteered from the illegal distribution of pot. Among those accused are the operators of Compassionate Caregivers, a chain-store medical marijuana operation that did more than $95 million in business. "These dispensary operators are no different than any other drug trafficker: They prey on people in our communities to make a profit," said Timothy J. Landrum, special agent in charge of the DEA in Los Angeles. Authorities say the owners of Compassionate Caregivers, Larry R. Kristich and James Carberry, ran dispensaries in Oakland, San Francisco, San Leandro, Ukiah, Bakersfield, San Diego and West Hollywood. The indictment alleges that profits from marijuana sales were used to purchase expensive automobiles and real estate in Costa Rica. At a West Hollywood shop known as Yellow House, operators accepted credit cards and did more than $1.7 million in business in a single month, the indictment contends. Others indicted included the operators of dispensaries in Corona and Morro Bay, where patients were charged two to three times the street value of marijuana, according to San Luis Obispo County Undersheriff Steve Bolts. He called it "a super-sized retail drug-dealing center working under the cloak and smoke of Prop. 215," the 1996 ballot measure that legalized medical cannabis in California. Also indicted in Morro Bay was Dr. Armand T. Tollette Jr. He is accused of writing marijuana recommendations for minors, failing to conduct physical examinations and paying "finder's fees" in marijuana for client referrals. Under federal law, conspiracy to distribute marijuana carries a sentence of up to 40 years in prison.

The Kha case is one way the grip of the drug warrior pigs is losing power. The Kha case was where cops were essentially using twisted, illegal federal rights to resist the vote of the state they swore to protect and serve. Their problem was partly that they were not allowed to protect federal law when it conflicted with state law because they were state cops. Their motivation is straight out hate of us pot grower/tokers and they would stop at nothing to destroy a medical user, including, as we can see in this case that failed before the US Supreme Court. Let's talk about another way the grip of the drug warrior pigs is dying. That would be where the govenor of a state refuses to do his duty much as the cops refused to do theirs. Here is some news on Rhode Island to back up my statement. Remember me, cops? I use the truth and you use guns and uniforms and creaky belts and terror. Feel me make you burn when you disobey me! And remember, cops, there is no way I could do that if you weren't law breaking trash and trash for a very long time at that. We Americans have just got to get you reined in on cannabis before you have any improved chance at getting the respect you need to do your job. I Want to respect you. R.I. House approves medical marijuana law

House lawmakers voted Wednesday to make the state's medical marijuana program permanent, setting up a conflict with Gov. Don Carcieri who previously vetoed the measure. The bill passed by a 51-12 vote, a margin wide enough to override a veto, said Larry Berman, a spokesman for House Speaker William Murphy. Rhode Island became the eleventh state in the country last year to legalize marijuana for medical purposes. Under the program, patients with cancer, AIDS and other debilitating illnesses can possess up to 12 marijuana plants and 2.5 usable ounces of the drug to ease their symptoms. The program expires June 30 unless lawmakers extend it. Selling and possessing marijuana remains illegal under federal law. A Senate committee voted 7-1 Wednesday to forward an identical bill for a full floor vote tentatively scheduled next week, said Greg Pare, a spokesman for Senate President Joseph Montalbano. Legislative leaders say both bills will be sent to Carcieri after next week's final vote.

With the help of CIA spotters, the Peruvian air force shot down 15 small civilian aircraft between 1995 and 2001, ostensibly as part of the US-abetted war on drugs, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee revealed Thursday. Many of the shoot-downs were made without warning within two to three minutes of the planes being detected. Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who disclosed the program, was the first to confirm the number of planes shot down in the CIA led "Airbridge Denial Program," which sought to derail the narcotic trade but also claimed the life of an American missionary from Michigan and her daughter in 2001. Charity Bowers' husband, Jim, is pictured above right. A State Department inquiry previously said that the program had also forced 23 jets to land, but had not identified the more than a dozen planes that were destroyed mid-flight. Most of the 15 planes shot down with the help of the CIA crashed in the jungle, Hoekstra told AP, and "the wreckage has not been or could not be examined to ascertain whether narcotics were aboard the aircraft. "The Bowers could have gone in the same category if they had crashed in the jungle," Hoekstra said, referring to the missionary and her child, who hail from his state. The classified report was sent to Congress in October, AP said. A spokesman for CIA director Michael Hayden asserted that the agency was "committed" to looking at the issue. "Director Hayden is absolutely committed to a process looking at systemic issues and accountability that is as thorough and fair as possible," spokesman Mike Mansfield said.
